Monterey Pine
Pinus Radiata

With its tall, tapering trunk and sweeping green needles, the Monterey Pine is both a practical workhorse and a striking presence. Native to the coastal cliffs of California, its natural range is small—but its impact across the world is vast.

Pinus is Latin for pine; radiata means “rayed,” a reference to the elegant arrangement of its needles in clusters of three. It grows swiftly and with purpose, making it a favoured species for plantation forestry in Australia, New Zealand, and beyond. Its cones are persistent, sometimes clinging to branches for years before releasing their seeds.

While the tree is endangered in its native habitat, it plays a vital role in timber production abroad. With care, it can be cultivated as a windbreak or ornamental specimen—bringing a sense of coastal wilderness to inland landscapes.
