A seasonal showstopper, the Liquidambar transforms dramatically with the turning of the year. Its Latin name—Liquidambar for “liquid amber” and styraciflua meaning “flowing with storax”—pays tribute to the aromatic resin it produces, once prized in perfumery and medicine.
Native to eastern North America, this handsome tree is best known for its glossy, star-shaped leaves, which ignite into fiery tones of crimson, orange and gold in autumn. Its tall trunk, textured bark, and distinctive spiky seed pods give it a sculptural quality year-round.
Though the fallen seed pods can be a nuisance in high-traffic areas, the Liquidambar’s dramatic colour and bold form make it a popular choice for avenues, parks, and open gardens.
