Cottonwood
Populus Deltoides

Fast-growing and full of movement, the Cottonwood is a tree that animates the landscape. Its Latin name—Populus for poplar, and deltoides in reference to its triangular, heart-shaped leaves—captures both its genus and its generous canopy.
Native to the riverbanks and floodplains of North America, the Cottonwood thrives in moist soils and open spaces. Its tall frame and fluttering foliage give it a commanding presence, particularly in the warmer months. Come spring, the air fills with soft, downy seeds—the “cotton” from which it takes its name—floating on the breeze in shimmering drifts.
While its brittle wood and expansive root system make it less suited to formal settings, the Cottonwood’s sheer scale and vitality lend it a wild, elemental beauty.
