Michael Lindeman
Regression Painting (Fashionable), 2022

NSW, AUSTRALIA
FINGER-PAINTED ACRYLIC ON MIRROR
109 X 170CM

In Regression Painting (Fashionable), Michael Lindeman pares painting back to its most primal gesture: the touch. Forgoing brushes for fingers, he invites a visceral, childlike mode of mark-making into a sharply conceptual framework. The mirror surface acts as both canvas and conduit, reflecting not just the artist’s actions, but the viewer themselves.

Lindeman is known for mining the terrain between sincerity and satire, and this work continues that excavation. The title, wry and deliberately loaded, gestures towards cultural cycles, aesthetic trends, and the ever-pressing desire to remain ‘in style’. What appears playful at first glance is underpinned by a deep interrogation of ego, authorship, and the image as commodity.

Layered, confrontational, and self-reflective in the most literal sense, this is a painting that doesn’t just look back at you - it asks you what you’re looking for.
